Smalltown Vineyards The Mixed Thing Grenache, Cinsault, Cabernet Franc et al, Barossa Valley 2018

Smalltown Vineyards (formerly Magpie Estate)

The clue is in the name 'The Mixed Thing'... which is exactly what this is. The Nuriootpa Viticulture Experiment Station was established in 1937 and has been experimenting with grape varietals in the Barossa all this time. Luckily for us, Rolf Binder & Noel Young have access to this site. They take all the fruit from this old, magical nursery then co-fermented it... this multivarietal blend changes slightly each year.

Meet the producer

We are very proud to be associated with Smalltown Vineyards (formerly known as Magpie Estate) of the Barossa Valley -...

Sourced from 30 year vines at the Nuriootpa viticulture nursery in the Barossa Valley, South Australia. Most grapes were picked on a fruit day. Wild yeast fermented and pressed off skins early to make this a really bright, crunchy, fresh style. The final blend is aged in a little older oak and then blended with 50% old vine Barossa Grenache. The blend consists of approx. Grenache (50%), Cinsault (15%), Cabernet Franc (10%), Malbec (8%), Merlot (7%), Riesling (5%), Carignan (3%) and Mataro (2%).

Tasting notes

Alarmingly easy to drink. This is a hugely vibrant glass of Barossa red. All the red varietals from the Nuriootpa nursery are co-fermented then judiciously blended with Barossa Grenache. Summer pudding in a glass – really refreshing fresh crushed fruit… this simply must be good for you!

Food match

Since it tastes like summer pudding... have it with that! Dress it up or dress it down, even try it a little chilled down.
