Production

Made from hand harvested 50 yr old vines on well exposed granite terraces. The climate is continental with Mediterranean influences. The vineyard is near the village of Cornas, mainly facing south in a naturally sheltered amphitheatre and the structure of the soil is very particular, called “Arènes” in French. Vines are mainly bush vines supported by the traditional “échalas” (wood stick) to keep the vegetation steady. Due to the gradient of the slopes, work in the vineyards is manual. Once harvested, whole bunches are destemmed and fermentation is in concrete tanks with remontage and délestage. Aging in a mix of old 400l casks and 228l barrels, one third new.

Tasting notes

This is a serious bottle of wine with plenty of structure and shape but also with plenty of plush fruit to justify it. Deep dark red with an intense nose of raspberries, spice and a hint of graphite. The palate has more black fruits (blackberry and cherry), pepper and toast. Approachable but evident tannins and for drinking now but with the potential to age very well.

Food match

Excellent with gamey red meats, mature hard cheeses or dark chocolate - Valrhôna of course.
