An English gem in Devon, Sandbridge Barton have been growing grapes and making wine for over 40 years and are recognised for producing some of England's most outstanding wines. A recent move from their original home on the Sharpham Estate across the river Dart, just south of Stoke Gabriel, has seen the opening of a new state of the art winery. With 38 acres of vines rolling down to the Dart, the site is one of England’s most picturesque vineyards.
Devon’s mild climate and limestone-rich soils give their wines a balance of character and precision. The estate produces stylish, fruit-forward wines from Madeleine Angevine, Pinot Noir and Bacchus and more. Traditional and new world techniques are employed resulting in a range of distinctive and carefully balanced wines with intense fruit flavours and aromas.
Sustainable environmental practices are at the heart of Sandbridge Barton and they are proud to be part of the Higher Level Countryside Stewardship Scheme and a membership of Sustainable Wines of Great Britain, with the winery certified by this programme.
This involvement demonstrates their active efforts to enhance biodiversity through initiatives such as tree planting, 10-metre-wide wildflower margins, and dedicated wildflower meadows. They have also rewilded certain areas of the estate to foster wildlife recovery and support the return of native species. In the vineyard, Sandridge Barton employs a regenerative approach. The estate avoids using pesticides or herbicides and refrains from tilling beneath the vines. Their priorities lie in nurturing soil health to foster the vines' natural resilience and to cultivate higher-quality fruit.
Sustainability permeates every aspect of their operations. The winery and cellar door are powered by solar energy, and water is supplied from an on-site spring alongside a rainwater harvesting system. Temperature control is achieved via air-source heat pumps, and all waste is processed on-site using a closed-loop aerobic digestion system.
