Sisters Lucie Fourel and Nancy Cellier own and run this small, organic estate in the hamlet of Mercurol, just outside Tain l’Hermitage. They are the 7th generation to work on these family lands which began in the 1800s. Having sold their quality grapes to a local co-operative for many years, the sisters started making their own wines in 2010. The Domaine covers 13 hectares on which the Marsanne and Roussanne grape varieties are planted for the white, and Syrah for the red. The estate extends over 6 terroirs on which there are vines of all ages up to 60 years. The wines ferment using only the native grape yeasts, with no chaptalisation or acidification and sulphur additions are minimal.
"In the constant pursuit of the respect of the environment, our interventions in the vines, as in the cellar, are simply to accompany the grapes, then the wine, towards its most authentic expression"
The estate has been certified organic by Ecocert since 2007. Harvesting is carried out manually and there is a respectful, hands-off approach to winemaking. The Fourel sisters believe in adapting their practices to climate change, by leaving more foliage on the vines to help the soil protect itself from drier, warmer weather with more plant cover to increase organic matter. Their story is one of respect for the environment.
