Meet the Producer

The Scacciadiavoli estate is one of the oldest in the Montefalco region of Umbria. Founded in 1881 with the most up-to-date vinification facilities of the time, it gained a reputation as one of the finest wineries in Umbria. It takes its name from an exorcist who lived in a neighbouring village, meaning 'the one who hunts devils'. In 1954 the estate was acquired by the Pambuffetti family. Umbria is half-way down the Italian 'boot' - it's land-locked and rugged, the 'green heart' of Italy with forest and a long history of agriculture and vine cultivation. The Scacciadiavoli estate consists of 130 hectares, 40ha of which are planted with vines, in the Montefalco DOC and DOCG and Spoleto DOC zones. The vineyards are at 350-450 metres altitude with sandy-clay soils. The main grapes grown here are Sagrantino and Sangiovese, but also Grechetto, Trebbiano and Spoletino. The indigenous Sagrantino deserves a special mention - it produces inky black, powerful, intensely tannic wines, far-removed in style from typical crowd-pleasers. A wine for those looking for something special, confident and characterful, that stands out from the masses.

A Note on Sustainability

The winery was progressive for its time, built over 4 floors, with the cellar 25 metres underground, and the vinification process gravity-fed. Since 2000 the estate has been widely renovated to minimise its environmental impact, chemical and energy use even further. Indeed, they produce all their own energy through the use of solar panels etc, and the estate is also in organic conversion (since 2023).
