Review Round-up (Sept ’24)
We truly believe our wines are fantastic, but you already knew that – we wouldn’t sell them if we didn’t!
That said, it is always nice when someone else recognises the quality in our portfolio, even better when they write a lovely review in the press to tell everyone about it…
Here’s a round-up of what they’ve been saying about us this last month!
Le Riche Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, WO Stellenbosch 2021; Tighter than the exuberant, ultra-perfumed 2020 was at the same stage perhaps, but this is another very impressive Reserve bottling from Christo Le Riche. Partnering grapes from seven blocks, it includes components from the lower Helderberg, the Simonsberg and the Jonkershoek Valley. Dense and deeply coloured, with 72% new wood, damson, fig and blackcurrant flavours and the concentration to age. 97 Pts Tim Atkin, South Africa Special report 2024
Waterkloof Boreas, WO Stellenbosch 2020; “A wine we’ve always wanted to make” is how Nadia Langenegger describes this beautifully balanced, refined Stellenbosch cuvée of Merlot with 33% Cabernet Franc, 19% Petit Verdot and 14% Cabernet Sauvignon. Fresh, floral and detailed, it has sculpted tannins, capsicum, red berry and blackcurrant flavours, rose petal top notes and stylish, deftly judged 94 Pts Tim Atkin, South Africa Special report 2024
Daschbosch Avon Clairette Blanche, WO Breedekloof 2023: A wine that deserves to be better known, this outstanding – and rare – Clairette Blanche comes from a 0.2-hectare parcel planted in 1977. Layered, textured and leesy, it’s exotic yet fresh at the same time, with peach and passion fruit flavours, lots of grip and tension and zesty, mineral-etched finish. 93 Pts Tim Atkin, South Africa Special report 2024
Daschbosch Mossiesdrift Steen, WO Breedekloof 2023: Jaco van Niekerk is doing great things at Daschbosch, exemplified by the quality of this old vine Chenin Blanc from a parcel planted in 1962. Perfumed and subtly wooded, it has a nice interplay between citrus and stone fruit flavours, with an undertone of stony reduction and some appealing patisserie sweetness. 93 Pts Tim Atkin, South Africa Special report 2024
Waterkloof Sauvignon Blanc, WO Stellenbosch 2023; This superb Sauvignon Blanc comes from one of the highest blocks at Waterkloof, located at 380 metres. Barrel fermented in older oak, with full malolactic, it has top notes of fennel, fynbos and petrichor and a layered palate of lime, gooseberry and passion fruit. 93 Pts Tim Atkin, South Africa Special report 2024
Le Riche Cabernet Sauvignon, WO Stellenbosch 2022; The straight Le Riche Cabernet will be ready to drink before the 2021, but it’s still a wine that will reward cellaring for a while yet. Reflecting the warmer vintage, it’s a floral, forward, pan-Stellenbosch blend with appealing Asian spice and graphite aromas, supple bramble and red berry fruit, fine tannins and a spine of acidity. 93 Pts Tim Atkin, South Africa Special report 2024
Circumstance Sauvignon Blanc, WO Stellenbosch; The wind-blasted slopes of the Schaapenberg are one of the best sites for Sauvignon Blanc in South Africa, producing small crops of intensely flavoured berries. Fermented in older French oak, this is nettley, tangy and zippy, with undertones of salt and umami and a core of lime and wet stones. 92 Pts Tim Atkin, South Africa Special report 2024
Circle of Life White, WO Stellenbosch 2023; The Circle of Life White is a co-fermented blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Semillon from two very windy parcels on the dramatic Waterkloof estate. Straw, jasmine and chamomile aromas are complemented by a palate of citrus, gooseberry and stone fruit flavours, tangy minerality and a dab of oak. 92 Pts Tim Atkin, South Africa Special report 2024
Fuenteseca Macabeo Sauvignon Blanc, DO Utiel-Requena [Organic] 2023; Notes of pears, yellow cherries, lemon peel and white blossoms. Medium-bodied, bright and juicy, with good fruit concentration and a flavourful finish. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Drink now. 90pts James Suckling.com
Uggiano Governo, Toscano IGT 2022; A smooth and juicy red with ripe red and dark fruit character and spicy complexity. Medium-bodied, polished and velvety, with a fine, even aftertaste. Nicely shaped and balanced. Drink now or hold. 91pts JamesSuckling.com
Uggiano Roccialta Riserva, Chianti DOCG 2021; This is a pretty red, fruity and fresh, with red cherries, raspberries and hints of blood oranges and star anise. Juicy and mouthwatering, with a medium body and a fine, silky texture. Sleek and seductive, showing freshness and poise. Drink now. 90pts JamesSuckling.com
Coterie by Wildeberg Cabernet Franc Malbec, WO Coastal Region 2022; A creamy, layered and flavorful red that has notes of cherries, plums, rosemary, coffee beans, chocolate and oranges on the nose. Caressing and full-bodied yet fresh, with supple tannins and delicious spice notes lingering. 92 Pts James Suckling, 20th August
Wildeberg Red, WO Franschhoek 2022; Raspberries, currants, mocha and grilled herbs on the nose. Earthy freshness. It’s medium-bodied with firm, chewy tannins and a wild finish. 92 Pts James Suckling, 20th August
Coterie by Wildeberg Chenin Blanc Grenache Blanc, WO Coastal Region 2022; Nicely complex aromas here with dried spices and cardamom mingling with flint, apricots and lemon curd. Creamy and spicy, with a medium to full body and a vivid and lively finish. 92 Pts James Suckling, 20th August
