Review Round-up (March 2025)
We truly believe our wines are fantastic, but you already knew that – we wouldn’t sell them if we didn’t!
That said, it is always nice when someone else recognises the quality in our portfolio, even better when they write a lovely review in the press to tell everyone about it…
Here’s a round-up of what they’ve been saying about us recently!
Chateau Mercian, Fuefuki Gris de Gris Koshu, 2022: From Yamanashi’s Fuefuki District this Koshu is almost pink, as you swirl it in the glass you can glimpse flashes of colour as it does the rounds. Delicate and light in style there’s grapefruit pith, Assam tea and stewed apple notes and some crushed oyster shell, which adds a lovely freshness on the finish. The Buyer (February 2025)
Argiles Blanches Cairanne Blanc 2023: Nutty, creamy and chalky on the nose, it’s a delicate but quite intense aroma, followed by a similarly yin and yang palate: there’s no shortage of lightly toasty vanilla notes, and the fruit is ripe and mouth-filling, and yet this 13% alcohol wine has a lightness and finesse about it too. Wine Pages ( February 2025)
Boutinot Cairanne Les Six 2022: It’s an alluring and powerful wine, combining deep spice, blueberry and plum aromas with floral highlights and a glimpse of smoky bacon rind. Sweet and mouth-filling with 14.5% alcohol, there’s a chewy robustness, firm and liquoricy tannins and good balancing acidity. Lovely, large-scaled stuff. Wine Pages ( February 2025)
Henners Vintage Brut 2018: It opens with the scent of green apples and leads into a creamier notion reminiscent of fresh apple crumble. The palate is exquisitely light and juicy, fragrant with apple and lemon and alive with foamy fine bubbles. The beautifully slender body highlights the predominance of Chardonnay in this light-footed delicious wine. Light bright juicy and wonderfully balanced. Vinous (February 2025)
Henners Blanc de Blancs 2018: It opens with a nose full of savour and brightness of white summer berries and fruit framed with lemon. The palate reveals the fullness of the 2018 vintage with generous fruit that gives this light-footed Chardonnay exquisite ripeness. Frothy fine bubbles enhance the freshness and reveal a subtle chalkiness. This is a bright, refreshing and beautifully long. Vinous (February 2025)
Can Leandro L’Arenal 2021: I tasted this wine as part of a six-pack that my friend Noel Young offered to customers who wanted to support the winemakers of Valencia after the terrible floods last year. And I loved it. It comes from a small 2.6-hectare vineyard called Lloma Rasa, which benefits from being at 550 metres. Made entirely with Monastrell, the best local red grape, it has hints of clove and tobacco leaf from partial whole bunch fermentation, flavours of wild thyme, fennel and rosemary, savoury tannins and a core of plum, strawberry and redcurrant fruit. Quintessentially Mediterranean. 92pts Tim Atkin (March 2025)
Sound of White Sauvignon 2022: Toast with a note of asparagus as well as all that Sauvignon green fruit. Rounded in the mouth, creamy, spicy. Oaky but not overdone. The oak shaping but not obscuring the fruit. (JH) 17pts Julia Harding MW for JancisRobinson.com (March 2025)
Heaphy Moutere Old Vine Riesling 2023: Intense citrus nose and a fumy/herbal note that reminds me of spontaneous fermentation. With air, a touch of honey. Unusual flavour – tastes more evolved than I would expect but there’s plenty of limy fruit on the finish. Full in the mouth and rounded by the alcohol. Rich and powerful. 16.5pts Julia Harding MW for JancisRobinson.com (March 2025)
Amauta Absoluto Tannat 2023: Toasty hints, rich plum-damson fruit. Palate is fleshy and with nip rugged tannin. Juicy, pleasantly structured and balanced, with an engaging savoury herbal/meaty edge… Toasty, with stewed black cherry, charcoal, a touch of cedar. The fruit has juicy vibrancy and delivers a really smart and enjoyable Tannat. 95pts Decanter (March 2025)
Novas Gran Reserva Carménère Organic 2023: Red pepper, damson and dark cherry aromas. Juicy, peppery freshness, plummy hints and minty notes. Well structured, good length, bright expression and a warm, mature finish. Great Value. 90pts Decanter (March 2025)
Valenciso Rioja Reserva 10 Años Después 2014: I retasted the 2014 10 Años Después that I already tasted last year. I found notes of fountain pen ink, earth and licorice, spices and smoke from the 36 months it spent in Caucasian oak barrels and the further 14 months in French barriques. 92pts Luis Gutiérrez, RobertParker.com (February 2025)
Valenciso Tempranillo Blanco 2023: It has some creaminess and is spicy and smoky, with a medium-bodied palate, contained ripeness, 13% alcohol and very good freshness and balance, clean and precise. It’s very tasty, with an almost salty finish. 93pts Luis Gutiérrez, RobertParker.com (February 2025)
Valenciso Cemento Rioja 2021: …had gentle extraction, keeping the fruit and liveliness. It has a developed and complex nose, with elegance and personality, some reminiscences of a red from the Northern Rhône, meaty, with notes of decayed leaves, truffle and forest floor. It’s juicy and ripe. 93pts Luis Gutiérrez, RobertParker.com (February 2025)
Gomez Cruzado Rioja Blanco 2 Año 2023: It’s balsamic and has a medicinal touch, hints of bay leaf, fennel and yellow fruit and flowers. It has a moderate 13% alcohol and nice balance, keeping the freshness, poise and primary character. 92pts Luis Gutiérrez, RobertParker.com (February 2025)
Gomez Cruzado Pancrudo Rioja 2022: One of the best new Garnacha bottlings from Rioja, the 2022 Pancrudo keeps the poise, balance and floral character in a warm and dry year like 2022. It does show a little more ripeness and some dusty tannins. 95pts Luis Gutiérrez, RobertParker.com (February 2025)
Gomez Cruzado Rioja Crianza 2021: I love the harmony, elegance and character of the 2021 Crianza, a modern rendition of the classical wines.. It is fresh and quite fruit-driven, with some floral and spicy notes, but the toast and spiciness is in the background, integrated and subtle. It has ripeness, power and elegance and drinks nicely already, but it should also last. This is very tasty. 93pts Luis Gutiérrez, RobertParker.com (February 2025)
Domaine Les 4 Vents, AOP Crozes-Hermitage [Organic] 2022: This is beautiful. It’s floral and expressive with some pepper, meat and iodine character, good concentration in the mouth, and lovely lush blackberry and cherry fruit. It’s friendly but it has edges, and a lovely graphite minerality, and there’s just so much personality here. 94pts Jamie Goode wineanorak.com (February 2025)
Château L’Ermite Cuvée Sainte-Cécile Rouge, AOP Costières de Nîmes 2021: Biodynamic Mourvèdre-Syrah-Grenache from Saint-Gilles. Juicy red fruit, blackberries, pot pourri, sloes and smoky leather, meeting subtle earthiness as it opens up. Lovely concentration, with firm, youthful tannins and crunchy acidity – real authenticity. Decanter.com (February 2025)
