Trento DOC wines may currently have a low profile in the UK, but they’re well worth shouting about.

As you can tell from the name, they’re produced in the mountainous region of Trentino, in the north-east of Italy. Stretching north of Lake Garda to the Dolomites, these are ‘Sparkling wines from the Mountain’. Trento DOC was the first Classical Method (ie secondary fermentation in bottle) sparkling wine DOC to be established anywhere in the world after Champagne, and the first in Italy. Crafted from traditional Champagne varieties grown up to 800m altitude, these are wines of the highest quality.

Cavit’s ‘Cantina Altemasi’ was founded in 1993, and here they produce a range of Altemasi Trento DOC sparklers including Altemasi Trento Millesimato Spumante Brut (100% Chardonnay) and Altemasi Trento Rosé Spumante Brut (a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Nero).

Both wines picked up Silver Outstanding awards at the International Wine and Spirits Competition 2018. Here are the Judges’ comments:

 

 

Altemasi Trento Millesimato Spumante Brut 2013: “Deep straw and an olive green hue. The finest bubbles are persistent and lead to a full savoury, herbal bouquet which perfectly matches its rich, mature, ripe palate of great concentration, intensity and finesse. Earthy, complex notes are stimulating and the enjoyment factor as high as the finish is long.”

Altemasi Trento Rosé Spumante Brut NV: “Salmon pink with a golden reflection. Scent of faded rose petals and yeasty, freshly baked bread aromas, a touch austere on the nose but with great personality and depth in the mouth. Full flavour, ample and complex, with a dry, saline vein up front and on finish, quite firm and composed and very polished.”
